The practitioner requests the individual to flex their bicep, while the practitioner secures the forearm, creating an isometric contraction. Then the practitioner releases their grasp on the forearm and observes if the individual is unable to check the contraction prior to striking themselves. If there is an inability to stop this motion without striking themselves, the test is positive for cerebellar dysfunction (when securing the arm, position it in a manner that the individual will not be harmed should there be an inability to stop the contraction).
